Tips for Packing

If you’re packing your own items, there are many ways you can make the work easier and keep your items more secure. Be sure to:

  • Make sure that items are firmly packed
  • Use cartons of adequate size and strength
  • Cushion bottom of carton with a layer of crumpled paper
  • Wrap all fragile items individually
  • Pack heavier items in lower layers and lighter items in upper layers
  • Paper cushioning absorbs shock – use it generously
  • Do not overfill carton and make sure that the top can close easily without bulging
  • Use blankets and quilts to protect large items (we can provide these day-of)

How to Pack Your Household Items

There are also some guidelines you can follow for specific household items. By following these tips, you can help ensure that your items arrive at your new home safely.

Dishware and glasses

  • Use two cube cartons. Cushion the bottom with crumpled up paper. Wrap each piece individually. Bundle utensils in groups of 3 and wrap the bundle. Cushion the top and sides with paper to prevent shifting.

Pictures

  • Use a picturebox. Line the bottom of the box with paper. Wrap the picture in bubble wrap, place it in the box, and then stuff the front, back and along the top with paper. It is sometime possible to pack more than one picture in a box; in these cases, separate them with a cardboard panel.

Lamps

  • Remove the light bulbs. Pack the lampshade in a separate box.

Electronics

  • Components and small electronics should be well wrapped and cushioned in either small (2 cubic feet) or medium (4 cubic feet) cartons. Large stereos and televisions should not be packed. They will be padded by driver and moved as furniture. Please note that electronics are not covered in the event of damage or breakage.

Clothing

  • Place hanging items into wardrobe cartons. For every 2 feet of closet bar you will need 1 wardrobe box. All other folded clothing is packed in medium (4 cubic feet) cartons. Place shoes in a medium box.

Items to Move with You

Not all items should be packed in the truck with the rest of your belongings. For your security, always carry the following items with you, or make special arrangements for their transport:

  • Stocks
  • Bonds
  • Currency
  • Jewelry
  • Furs
  • Stamps
  • Coins
  • Securities
  • Insurance policies
  • Passports
  • Valuable papers

Restricted Items That May Not Be Accepted

By law, movers may refuse to ship certain items. Restricted items that could be rejected from the van include:

  • Paints, thinners, oils and varnishes
  • Ammunition and firearms
  • Bottled gas and propane
  • Lamp oil
  • All flammables, explosives and corrosives
  • Motor fuels and oils
  • Nail polish remover
  • All aerosol cans
  • Matches
  • Alcohol
